Every weekend…

needs to be a three day one.  Feels like an odd day today for some reason.  Hmmmmmm. But just have to get through this week before I have fall break and I get a four day weekend.

Last night was a pretty chill night.  Nothing exciting going down and Up = soooo cute.  And actually pretty funny.  I ❤ Pixar!

I slept like a rock last night too.  And I even slept in later than usual.  I got up at 0830 which is about 45 minutes to an hour later than a usual weekend.  I just felt so comfy laying in bed that when I actually woke up at 0800 I did not move for another half hour.  Oh man, it just felt so indulgent and wonderful!

Not to indulgent with my body.  The rain has moved on and the temps are mild so I ignored my inner voice telling me to take it very easy/rest today and I got in 10.3 miles.  They were sooo slow (indicating that said inner voice is pretty darn smart) but it felt good to be out there and be *dry*.  The sun even came out for some of it!

My legs did warm up and the second half wasn’t as bad fatigue wise.  I think after a certain point my brain disconnects from my body and pain signals (or whatever you want to call them) don’t get through.  Resulting in a run down body, I can feel my quad, hammy and calf muscles all twitching as they try to repair the breakdown.

Oddly enough my pace was roughly the same as the past few days (and I guess even this week). Read: slow. But it’s been consistent.  Which means to say consistent for AM runs sans breakfast.  In the past I’ve always eaten before my weekend runs because I sleep in and want to eat first thing.  Lately I’ve been sleeping in and still running immediately.  Although I’ve yet to scientifically prove this or test my theory in any sort of reliable way I’m convinced that runs are easier with a full breakfast in the stomach.  Unfortunately during the week in order to eat before running I’d have to get up incredibly early but the weekends shouldn’t present this problem because I don’t have classes. Yesterday and today, however, I didn’t eat breakfast until almost 11.  (Aside: Which, contrary to my intuition, still means that I’m hungry for lunch by 1300 etc.).

Not quite sure where I was going with that paragraph (heh) but I think it has to do with my speed suffering a bit and I’ve been thinking about pacing/effort in relation to when I’ve last eaten lately.

I’m almost afraid to do a weekly recap for this week because I know that I pushed myself, which is why the pace is slow and my quads are still sore and I’m tired and hungry and thirsty and blah. I don’t really need the numbers to tell me that.  I’m sure my miles are skyyyyy high too because of a lack of rest day this week.

Luckily tmrw is a jam-packed day and I’ll be damned if I DON’T take a rest day.

Anyway, despite my running sucking lately there been lots of great running and racing this weekend for people I know and “know”.  Over at RW, DonS ran a sub 3 marathon! TBM ran a 28 miler and spreT ran a 100 mile ultra! Pics from the finish showed a smile on his face. Bamf.  Plus my friend from school is running (well I’m sure she’s done by now) her first marathon! The results haven’t been posted yet but I’m sure she did so well. I’m getting impatient though because I want to find out how she did!

[EDIT: My friend did SO WELL. She ran a 4:30:23.  AWESOME! I’m sure she’s exhausted but pumped right now.  I’m sure most of you know how it feels to run your first anything: on-top-of-the-world]

Being surrounded by amazingness in the running world just makes me want to go at it harder though. Tough life: most ppl would rather sell their souls to the devil than run.  I also just finished Born to Run so hopefully I can do a mini-review of it and The Perfect mile sometime soon. And yes, I chose to read Born to run over writing my muscle physiology lab write up.  Guess it’s time to do it now. LeSigh.

Have a great rest of your Sunday y’all!

  1. If I follow your daily miles, you don’t do “long runs” per se … just a consistent 10-14 everyday. You just run. Very impressive.

Funny how the mind overrides the body when it calls for help. Finding that balance between mentally tough and suicidal is most of the fun! Enjoy your well deserved RD.

  2. Isn’t it awesome to sleep in a little, even by only a half hour or so and then wake up without an alarm?? that is the best feeling.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

  3. Take your rest day girl! You’ve been pushing the running hard the past week. I would love to read a review of Born to Run…whn you get a change.

  4. I slept in until 7 today! Haha for me that is sleeping in. I am with you on the food thing. I used to always eat before running, but I just got in the habit of not doing it because I would have to get up so early. Even before long runs I sometimes forget to eat!

  7. Yeah, a rest day is definitely in order. You can run miles and miles but if you don’t give the body a chance to repair and recover than you end up just constantly breaking down muscle which isn’t so good for you in the long run. So yeah, I know it’s hard, but try to stick to a consistent rest day schedule. You’ll feel better about your running too!

  8. I would love you to tell me WHY you run…http://thespecialktreatment.wordpress.com/ks-crazes-things-i-love-right-now/ Sometimes I run to ease my anxiety, especially when other things in my life feel chaotic. It is something “I can control” and yet, we can’t. Our bodies aren’t things for us to manipulate, but to honor and listen to. I am wondering if a week off would bring some insight into your repetoire and release some of the pressure for you…
