Landmarks

Happy Friday everyone! Although for me I really have no idea what day of the week it is.  Everything blurs together! I keep having to look at my wall calendar (it’s James Bond so I look at it quite frequently haha).  But since it’s Friday that means I have to go home tomorrow.  Even though I’ve been done since Monday I decided to stick around until they shut the dorms Saturday so that I can actually relax and decompress.  I know once I go home the responsibility of taking care of a house will fall on me once again.  You know: “Go drive your sister here” ” Cook dinner for us tonight” “Why are you lounging around the house? DO something” Not so fun.

But want to know what is fun? Two landmarks for me running wise. First off my shoes have surpassed the  2000 mile mark as of mile 4.7 on my run today.  Luckily I’ve had no injuries, no nagging pains, nothing to suggest that my shoes are WAY overdue to be changed.  I don’t even really know why I haven’t changed them because I do have a newer pair on my shoe rack.  Maybe because I’ve had no issues so far.  I think though that I’m not going to tempt fate and finish out this week with ’em then retire them.  They do look a bit…worn down.  Like I should be a bit embarrassed by the condition of them.  Maybe I just have a superhuman body to withstand that kind of abuse.  I wish my camera wasn’t busted so that I could take a picture.  Oh well, I think I’m getting a new one for Christmas so I won’t throw the shoes out just yet.

I also hit a landmark with my running streak.  Well not THE streak because even though it’s been 5 weeks I’m sure I’ve gone longer.  It’s a streak within the past 7 days.  Since last Saturday (so 7 runs total) I have run double digits every day.  Woot! I will admit I had the idea tucked in the back of my brain ever since Monday when I knew I’d have so much time to run and rest and relax this week (and oh alliteration I ❤ thee)

I banged ran 11.3 miles today.  And it was another really cold one.  9* real temp and -1* windchill temp when I woke up.  I really like running first thing but….I’m my hands don’t like temps that cold.  Well they don’t really like any temps lover than 50* but that’s beside the point.  I’m seriously considering EarlyRunner’s suggestion of snowmobile gloves.  Sounds like they could be a winner.  Any suggestion where I can find them? Hardware store? Anyway to pass the time I ate some breakfast, watched a bit on NCIS then headed out when it was a balmy 24* real temp and 14* windchill.  Holllleeerrrr. Not.

The reason that “banged” is crossed out above is because I can’t in good faith call this a great run that I hammered out.  The first 5 or so miles? Sure.  But I’m getting greedy with expecting my body to perform at such a high level day in and day out.  I think RunningFiance is right when she said a few days ago that my legs need a break.  But knowing me I am too stubborn to listen.  Especially when I get an idea into my head to bang out a week of double digits.  Technically the week I was thinking of isn’t over yet (I wanted to go Mon-Sun) but we’ll see how I feel tomorrow when I get up.

Like I said the first 5-6 miles were going well.  I mean, my hands were frozen solid (which I think by going out in such cold weather day in and day out has given me a semi-tolerance to the thawing out process — I wasn’t laying on the floor praying after today haha) but I was going strong.  I hit some sort of wall after that and I just felt lethargic after that.  Miles 6-10 were sluggish and I wondered if I was crazy for everything I’ve done this week.  Of course I was able to truly bang out a good last mile, MUCH faster than my overall pace.  And despite my feeling heavy my overall time wasn’t bad at all.  Only 3 seconds slower than my goal easy pace.  Not sure what that says about me, physically or mentally.  But it was a pleasant surprise.

Oh and just a note to all my high mile runs: The other hours of the day I am laying down or lounging in my comfy chair with NCIS on, my Spanish show, listening to music etc.  I’m not then dashing off to do a billion kajillion things.  Which is why I think this week was perfect to attempt my streak because after this I’ll be at the mercy of my family and actually have to do stuff for people other than myself haha.

[Edit: Keep those questions coming! I’m about halfway to 20 now 🙂 ]

  1. Congrats! Both are a serious accomplishments. 2,000 miles on one pair is bionic. Are they NB’s? You must be an uber efficient runner. Nearly as impressive is the 7 days of double digits … ESPECIALLY in this weather. You are a beast!

  2. hey, I got a shoutout! sweet! And I totally understand you’re mental difficulties with slowing down and taking a break. I said I was going to do the same and did 7.4mi of speedwork today. I’m terrible.

Btw, just reading about your temps makes me cold. And I heart NCIS!!

Ready to go home and see your fam? You leave tomorrow, right? Have fun!
