Mopey. But There’s A Physics Cartoon!

From my last post it seems like a lot of you are slacking in the core work department. It makes me feel better because I skipped last night’s session and the one I was going to do this morning.  Oops.

It’s just been cold and rainy lately. And with my budget being what it is, my roomies and I have decided to not turn the heat on yet.  I mean, it is only the beginning of October after all.  This leaves my apartment cold and rain + cold = blanket on couch with book.  End of story.

The weather was more of the same this morning too: 54*, 96% humidity, RAIN.  Lots of rain.  Luckily (?) the rain was mostly mist for the majority of the run.  I still got soaked by the end but it wasn’t so bad.

The run itself wasn’t so bad either.  I was going to do a speed session but, even though my warm up was feeling good, I ended up saying screw it.  You may think that I just thought those words but I uttered them aloud.  My heart wasn’t really into it and I figured that whatever I did today wouldn’t really help me out that much on Monday.

Justification much? 😀

That said I may do some short sprints later this week just to “reawaken” those fast twitch muscles.  Or do a tempo.  We’ll see.

True to MM form I opted for a long run today.  I also figured that doing a long run on my typical long run day (Saturday) wouldn’t be the best for Monday.  And you know how much I like going long.

Today was a truer recovery than yesterday was supposed to be.  It wasn’ t like last week where my body just said NO to any kind of pace but it was much slower than yesterday.  A good thing.

  • 1st loop: 4.1 miles @ 8:54
  • 2nd loop: 5.6 miles @ 8:48
  • 3rd loop:     2.8 miles @ 8:21
  • total:                  12.5 miles @ 8:44

I’m glad that I didn’t end up doing the speedwork. I tried to pick it up a little bit during each loop and I just didn’t want to.  Why force it? I will say that my body doesn’t hurt the way it did yesterday.  I don’t know what it was but every. single. muscle. hurt.  Today? Not at all.  Weird. Still, better safe than sorry.  And I know that longer runs don’t run me down the way speed stuff does.

And this weather is making me kind of mopey and grouchy. And the whole lack of sleep thing. I actually had a really mopey paragraph here but I think it made me feel WORSE by writing it out.  So I deleted it.  Oh the power of amazingness just deleting it felt.

I just need to remind myself that I A) had a great run today B) am working with fun people so the work day will *hopefully* go better and C) this weekend is going to be great: the weather is going to be nice and I have a race.

So I’ll leave it there.  A nice short post. And the physics joke that made me smile this morning and lifted my mood (aka is AWESOME and I will be on there periodically today 🙂 )

And check out the giveaway from Shut Up and Run

  1. I agree with NOT turning on the heater just yet. It IS getting really cold. Great weather for running though. Stay warm =)

  4. I’m holding off on the heater as well. It’s supposed to be semi-nice again soon, so I’m rocking the two comforters and blanket on the couch until I’m sure the cold is here to stay… They never said being a frugalista is easy… 😉

    • My plan is to do that until at least November. Hopefully the weather turns nicer for both of us!

  5. xkcd comics are fantastic. Especially love their silly scrollover text.

PS. Eff core work! My attitude toward it has changed vastly over the past few years. Lately all I do is 2 x 3′ of fancy planks alternated every other day with a nasty bunch of pushups immediately after my runs. Other than that? Based on experience, I’ve come to suspect that the type of core work where I’m flopping around on the ground doing situp-y stuff is a mostly useless waste of my time… aaaannnd there’s my anti-corework rant of the day. Heehee, sorry. 🙂

PS again. Weather-induced mopeyness — ugh you are not alone!! I try to cheer myself up by celebrating the “perfect rainboot” weather… and the “perfect laying on the couch with tea and a good book” weather… although I guess both of those make it hard to get out the door in the morning with running shoes on… haha. Keep on keepin’ on. Long comments for the win.

  6. i don’t want to give in to turning on the heat yet either… i’m hoping to hold off til november (i’m in SC). partly from a watching-the-budget sense but mostly cause i just don’t wanna admit it’s cold!! haha.

as for that cartoon. yah totally over my head haha. i am watching cloudy with a chance of meatballs, that’s about all the science-y talk i can take tonight.

  7. One of the years that I lived in Boston my roommate and I took saving money to the extreme by setting our “heat” between 55 and 60 for the entire winter. He brined our Thanksgiving turkey in our spare room with the windows open. I can’t say I recommend it that strategy… but walking around with a snuggie and a space heater sure is cheaper than gas.

  8. Lack of sleep is the worst. I am so grumpy when I haven’t had enough sleep… I’m going to be grumpy later on, up early for Mike to go to uni and I’m working a late.. Might try and have a nap but I hate having naps, they don’t seem to make me feel any less grumpy hah

I’ve not done much core last month either, I only meant to do it once a week and I didn’t :S

  10. It’s 60 degrees in my house and we are holding strong. I’m trying to make it to November – we’ll see! And hopefully you’ll un-mope soon. The weather is looking better, and fall running IS THE BEST.

  11. I Love xkcd! I haven’t turned my heat on either. Its ok when I go to bed but I am always cold when I wake up.

  12. Totally don’t get the comic… LOL

We caved and turned our heat on. It got down to 48 degrees the other night! Oh well.

  14. Ok girl…speed work TONIGHT!!! 🙂

  15. Brian refuses to turn on the heat at his apartment so whenever I am there I am always wearing tons of layers! It does save money so I get it, but I am still cold! lol

So your race is Monday? I am confused?
