A Couple of Snowy Runs.

Hello from the Winter Wonderland that is RI right now.  And no that’s not sarcasm.  I’m just really happy in general right now (and really busy with not much time spent in my apartment hence the decreased posting/commenting!) so it’s hard to be bitter about the weather. …and Shelby told me I can’t complain.

I am actually trying to take an optimistic and not so angry/bitter standpoint on the snowfall (I think the last I heard of it we were standing around 13 or 14″).  I spent the snow day hunkering down with a friend and, while driving back to my place this morning, I actually found myself smiling at the beauty that is the morning after a nor’eastern.  I’m still itching to get out of here but this attitude can be described as progress my friends.

Especially since I had a fantastic snow day. Like I really wasn’t cursing the snow and cold.  First, after knowing Wednesday was a snow day, I went out with the friend I was crashing with and didn’t go to bed until 0400.  And then slept in until NOON. Crazy right?

And not only did I get an 9.5 mile run in during the blizzard, which was great running in the snow despite it being hard and tiring, but my friend whom I was staying with went to a park after dinner and had a big snowball fight and built a snowman.  The snow wasn’t perfect for packing so the snowman was a bit of a fail but it was fun.  After we headed back to drink some hot cocoa and watch Despicable Me, which was a cute and hilarious movie, followed by March of the Penguins.  And then we fell asleep around 2200.  Which given how late we were up the night before doesn’t make me feel that bad hahah.

So good snow day.

Since I spent the night at my friend’s house I got a late start on my run this morning as I had to drive back to my place.  I still got in a long run although I wasn’t sure as I figured my snow run would have really tired out my legs. 17 miles done though.  And the streets were plowed okay but nothing 100% clear so I’m sure that my legs are getting very good resistance training out of it.  The run itself was  just okay.  I felt good the whole time but each lap (I ran a 4 X 4.25 loop because I knew it’d be a safe route) was slower than the previous one.  Not by leaps and bounds but it was a completely positive split run.  The loops were: 8:51, 9:11, 9:11, 9:16.  Given how tired my body is currently, from not sleeping a lot the past two weeks, I’ll take it.  The entire run was 17 miles @ 9:07.  Not too shabby considering this is the longest run I’ve done by far since WR.

And I finished my run at 1115 and was able to shower and eat and get to work on time at noon.  That’s the definition of a BAMF 😉

I was tagged by Chelsea earlier with the Stylish Blogger Award.

Thanks lady! The gist is to re-tag Chelsea, tell y’all 7 things about myself, then tag others. I’m not going to do that last part.  I feel like most of y’all have already been tagged.  Feel free to do it if you haven’t.  I love learning about others.

  1. I consider myself pretty stylish.  I don’t think that anyone will ever model their look after me but I always look well put together.
  2. I’m discovering the joy of hot cocoa with Baileys.  So are my friends.  We went through a lot of it this snow storm.
  3. But Jack is my main man.  Jack and Bailey’s makes a perfect couple though.
  4. I’m decent at bar games.  I’m learning how to be better at pool and I can play a mean game of darts.  Not that I’m anything special at it
  5. but rather that I’m ambidextrous.  So when we all switch to our weak hands , mine is comparable to my strong hand. I do consider myself a south paw though.
  6. I’m taking an online grant writing course right now and it’s going well.  I’m learning a lot although I got WAY behind on the lessons and had to do 9 of them last weekend.  Oops.
  7. This weekend I have really big plans with my lil sister.  She’s 19 and coming to visit me for the first time in Providence.  I’m pumped.  It’s going to be one heck of a night.

  1. hi, would love to do at least 1 run with you. last time we talked about meeting up for a run you were still looking to break 3:30 i think…now that you are a 3:09 marathoner, not sure i’ll be able to keep up! what pace would you be looking to run? I wouldn’t mind meeting up to run some of the Newton hills or something but prob wouldn’t want to go any faster than a 7:35 pace. Also, the offer still stands for running trails. We do run slow on the trails but it’s still a great workout. I’m running the Hyannis marathon, i’ll be pacing a group of friends to a 3:50 finish. As you know, i just ran Disney, so i probably won’t be getting in too many long/intense workouts before Boston but i’d love to meet up with you for one!

    • Seriously just let me know what’s going down with your running and we’ll have to run. I want to get at least one LR (or LRish) done on those hills…maybe in March? And I’d be interested in the trails too.

  2. I am so impressed by you running in the snow! You make me feel like such a wuss!

  3. You have a liver of a rock star and the legs of well, a Boston marathoner!!

Have fun with your sis this weekend; I expect there will be some pics to look forward to!

  4. I have done #6 from time to time. Getting behind is so easy to do!
The snow looks beautiful!! I’ll admit it, I’m jealous. I’d like to run in the snow one day, as long as it’s not in a blizzard. 🙂 Your snow looks so pretty and peaceful.

  5. I want to see Despicable Me soooo bad! It looks adorbs.

And you’re lucky your sister comes to visit! I’ve been trying to get my brother to drive up solo and hang for a weekend. It’s happened once- two years ago. Ugh…

  6. your snow day sounds a lot better than mine, which included not leaving my apartment as I worked from home. and a treadmill run. BORING. I have never seen the penguin movie but I want to!

  7. So envious of your snow day and winter wonderland! That’s pretty damn impressive pacing for a “first long run after the marathon” AND in all that snow.

  8. You are an inspiration! That is all. 🙂

    Comment by Terri — January 13, 2011 @ 19:12

  9. Yay for taking an optimistic stance toward the snow storm. I told Eric last night that if we had another snow day today we were going to play in the snow like we were 10 again… didn’t happen but the intent was there, right?

    Comment by Kelly — January 13, 2011 @ 20:37

    • Totally counts for intent. Get out there next time because it was a blast! 😉

  10. -2 points for declaring you play a mean game of darts and then saying you’re not special. 🙂 Come on it either is or isn’t. I say it is if you’re willing to play darts in public in a bar while intoxicated (dominant or weak hand).

    Comment by danny — January 13, 2011 @ 22:07

    • hahah well I think it’s special to me. Grand scheme of things? Maybe not so much…

      Comment by marathonmaiden — January 19, 2011 @ 10:23

  11. Looks like you have as much snow as we do in MI. I’m already kinda tired of it…I wish fall had stayed…permanently. And I’d say 9.5 miles in the snow is pretty badass for sure!

    Comment by emily — January 13, 2011 @ 22:30

  12. Good for your snowy run! I ran 8 miles in the snow and it took FO-E-VA. And I drank all the Bailey’s in my house over the summer (straight up, on the rocks, yum), so there was none to warm me up! Although, I do run at 8 a.m., so that might be a little early to crack open the bottle.

    Comment by sarah — January 14, 2011 @ 06:22

    • Go out and get yo’self more bailey’s girl! I’ll admit to bailey + coffee a little earlier in the day than customary sometimes….

      Comment by marathonmaiden — January 19, 2011 @ 10:27

  13. Running in the snow is fun but definitely hard. I think hot chocolate with Bailey’s would be the perfect way to warm up after that. BTW I saw Despicable Me over the break and thought it was really cute.

    Comment by Chelsea — January 14, 2011 @ 06:48

  14. Ohh I had some baileys hazelnut hot choc over christmas, soo yummy!

    Comment by Laura — January 14, 2011 @ 07:40

  15. I am truly trying to not complain…but am so over snow it isn’t funny.

    Comment by Laura — January 14, 2011 @ 08:32

  16. i liked march of the penguins but i think i fell asleep in the middle of it (in the theater)!!!! lol. it has that wash over you feel to it. morgan freeman’s voice i think. although i have to admit i never knew penguins had to go through so much.

the snow is totally throwing off my outdoor running. i don’t know how you go. i literally can’t- there are no sidewalks and barely space on the roads for two cars let alone me. it is a mess out there. really annoying!

    Comment by Lacey — January 14, 2011 @ 10:49

    • Morgan Freeman is the voice of GOD. End of story.

As far as my outdoor running: I’ve been limited in my routes but luckily there’s a 4.5ish mile loop that has a bike lane so between the car lane and bike lane I’m usually good.

      Comment by marathonmaiden — January 19, 2011 @ 10:29

  17. 17 miles at just over 9:00/mile? I would say that is pretty solid. Do you have a plan to not Irish up the coffee before Boston?

    Comment by Mike Russell — January 14, 2011 @ 13:51

  18. You can complain about winter all you want! Well, once you go back to work you can anyway.

    Comment by Jess — January 14, 2011 @ 14:18

  19. #1? really? 😉 jk. i def don’t ever look put together. when you have babies you need to name one jack and one bailey.

yeah the weather complaining is pretty dumb. we are a whiney bunch! we’re supposed to be hardcore runners…

    Comment by lindsay — January 14, 2011 @ 14:21

    • Bahahah. I’m writing those baby names down 😉

And I don’t know if I ever replied to your “how goes the snow?” comment from days ago but it’s going okay. I’m alive at least….but my attitude is positive for the snow which means positivity all around 🙂

      Comment by marathonmaiden — January 19, 2011 @ 10:31

  20. Every one complains about the winter, then everyone complains about the summer or the rain or any weather we are currently having a lot of! It goes with the territory I guess!

    Comment by J — January 14, 2011 @ 14:49

  21. Ahh- a lovely snow angel! And I think you’re right that snow days can be beautiful and enjoyable. I think it definitely helps if you don’t have them too often though 🙂

    Comment by Lisa — January 14, 2011 @ 20:45

  22. I am seriously impressed by those people who run in the SNOW–INTENSE!

    Comment by Jess — January 14, 2011 @ 22:07

  23. Yeah, the snow sure put a damper on things this week but it looks like you got out there and enjoyed yourself anyway. Awesome!
Have fun with your lil sister =)

    Comment by The Laminator — January 14, 2011 @ 22:34

  24. We’re cold and snowy here, too, but we don’t deal with it nearly as well as all of you notherners do! 🙂

    Comment by Terri — January 15, 2011 @ 12:24

  25. I need you to teach me how to break out of MY black streak!! And yes, waking up rested really is the best! I hope you’re having a great weekend!

    Comment by Muncher Cruncher — January 15, 2011 @ 21:08

  26. JACK??? Seriously try JAmeson. I swear you will never go back, my dear…

and I still envy ladies that are stylish. I am just not, and I think I make faux-pas about 2 times per week (ahem….wearing now pants backwards yesterday on my first sky run ever)

    Comment by specialkphd — January 16, 2011 @ 09:53

  27. That snow is awesome! Great job on the LR, too!

    Comment by Rebecca — January 16, 2011 @ 10:36

  28. NICE job on the 17 miler, that is impressive! And you better show your lil sister a good time – get her drunk!! I mean…set a good example 🙂
