Okay So I Lied

about the “oh my body recovers fast” statement from my race report.  Because 48 hours after the marathon my quads and shins hurt. Blahhhh. But now, 72 hours later, it’s gone. Annoying.

But recovery from The Boston is going.  Like I said above, my muscles feel fine. But my sunburn hurts

and knee hurts too. Thanks for the good lucks about my doctors appointment today and it was about what I expected: slight tear in my flexor tendon and, rather than send me to an ortho and “tests” and a potential cutting-away-happy person to see, my doctor gave me a PT script to get me back faster and stronger.

AND joy upon joy, because I’m a VISTA (aka the government legitimately says I have no income) the PT place that’s in my building (who works with the free clinic patients) has discounted my co-pay heavily. So I can actually go. I probably wouldn’t have because of the co-pay price (this is why I didn’t go 5 weeks ago when the pain started). HIZZAH. Double hizzah because my first appointment is tomorrow.

So still no running post-Boston. I’ma be waiting for the PT’s go-ahead. Bleh. The funny thing is that mentally I have no desire to run right now. I saw some people on my drive to work this morning out on my usual route and I thought “hahah you @$$^&*% are out running. And I’m not”

A little discerning because I’m always itching to run.  And analyze. But I’m not doing any post-race analysis. Yet. This is the second Boston I’ve run injured so there’s obviously something wrong with how I trained.

For now, I’m spectating the Cox Providence Marathon on May 1st (a friend is running and I’m going to cheer him on) and I know that seeing others out racing and pushing themselves with likely get me going.  Hopefully by then I’ve been cleared to run. I think that’ll be the case but you never know. And with the amazingly springlike weather this week I should want to.  But I’m content with sleeping a lot and sitting on the balcony post-work reading.

And the winners of my dirty joke = music giveaway (and I loved reading the jokes!) are:

Boston 2011 Training Mix: Sarah, who wrote

A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked, ‘Crushed nuts?’
‘No, arthritis.’

why are blonde jokes so short?
So brunettes can understand them.

❤ so send me your addys to marathonmaidenrunner@gmail.com and I’ll get those out to you ASAP. And by ASAP I mean whenever I get to the store to buy CDs. If you harass me enough it’ll be on the sooner side!

  2. I totally got burned too! My right side is much worse than my left though. Glad PT can fix you and that you get to go!

    Comment by Nick — April 21, 2011 @ 16:49

  3. glad it’s nothing too severe, and yayy for PT! maybe it’s just my bias as a future PT, but it sounds like your doc was smart to get you to someone who can help you heal up stronger and hopefully prevent getting re-injured in the future 🙂 and glad it’s semi-cheap so you have the cash money to go haha. all of my spectator friends are super sunburnt too! i think we new englanders kind of forgot what the sun looked like, lol.

  4. OUCH SUNBURN!! I have one too, currently, and it’s driving me crazyyyy!!

  5. So if a sunburn and sore knees are the extent of your Boston race, then I’d say you need to work on your Race Till You Puke Mentality. Or just not get hurt three weeks before.

Make sure the PT does something to help, you need to run a fast marathon sometime. Hell, your training has been faster than your marathon! 🙂

  6. Ahahaha I read my joke and laughed. That’s a funny one.

You are lucky to get such a good deal on PT. Take advantage of the fatigue/lack of desire to run, and heal up! And save that sunburn pic, because that is wiggitywhack.

  7. Good luck with the PT…and the sunburn. Yikes. Congrats on the race..you=awesome.

  8. Great news on the PT and affordability (sorry to hear it’s a tear though). Take the time off without worry, you deserve it and a bit of recharging is definitely in order.

  9. Ouch on the sunburn and torn tendon.
    Woot for the win!
Heal up girl. I know you will. : )

  10. omg your sunburn! Ouch! I am SO glad you get a discount for PT and are able to go – I’m sure it will really help you. It has done wonders for my achilles! Sounds like taking it easy is just what you need right now though – enjoy it!

  11. Just read your race report–so sorry you had a tough day out there. And sorry you are hurting! But at least you can get into PT and move forward. Now on that sunburn–do they still make Noxzema? That’s what we always used when I was young! Feel better soon!

  12. oh I love those jokes! i’m gonna steal it! You need aloe vera on that ASAP!

    Comment by lindsay — April 22, 2011 @ 13:25

  13. def put aloe vera on that sunburn, works wonders!! After my race (even though it wasn’t a marathon), it was tough getting my MIND and body back out there, so I think its normal you are not missing the running right now, especially since your body needs time to heal.

    Comment by Caree @ Fit-Mama — April 22, 2011 @ 14:40

  14. If you can find it, find a lotion called “Ocean Potion.” It comes in a big, clear bottle and is amaaazing. I’ve never had a sunburn when I’ve put this on afterwards!

I like Dallas okay, and there are some parts of the whole DFW area I really do like, but on a whole I like Houston better. I’m a little biased though because I grew up here!

    Comment by Tara @ Dashing in Pearls — April 22, 2011 @ 15:08

  15. Hope the PT went well and your knee gets back to feeling normal soon! That sunburn looks ouchie!

    Comment by J — April 22, 2011 @ 17:43

  16. Ouch all over! Hope you feel better soon. Sorry Boston was rough for you, but you are still BAMF!

    Comment by Chelsea — April 22, 2011 @ 19:58

  17. haha. aka these people will never get their cd’s 😉

hooray for affordable PT service! take your time to get healthy. i guess it’s good that you aren’t mentally ready so that you don’t push yourself too much yet? i’m gonna have to throw out the “overtrained”/burnt out excuse. to me the general definition of that is not enjoying running like you used to. i used to think there was no way i could ‘have that’ but looking back on 2010 i think maybe i did…

    Comment by lindsay — April 22, 2011 @ 20:47

  18. I think everyone who watched and ran the marathon is now burnt haha, so at least you are in good company.

Also I think it’s good that you can’t run and don’t have the urge. As someone who often wants to and can’t- thats a bad place to be. You’ll get back into it when the time comes!

    Comment by Kelly — April 22, 2011 @ 20:54

  19. Yowww that sunburn looks sore… I unfortunately got some not so sexy sock lines when I raced yesterday dohhh

    Comment by Laura @ Box run eat — April 23, 2011 @ 13:37

  20. Ouch! That sunburn looks painful! I guess Boston really was sunny and hot, huh?
Sorry about the no running for a little bit. I’m sure it’s a lil frustrating, but
hey, you already ran Boston…TWICE…not many runners can say that. So let your
body heal and you’ll be back to crushing your workouts again in no time! Take care =)

    Comment by The Laminator — April 23, 2011 @ 23:54

  21. good luck! that is crazy. Hope you feel better soon!

    Comment by Courtney (Pancakes and Postcards) — April 24, 2011 @ 10:53

  22. The best thing for sunburn is that Evian spray…it’s the only thing that makes me feel better!!

    Comment by Ameena — April 24, 2011 @ 11:31

  23. PT is PAINFUL! I hate someone else telling me what to do…but in the long “run”, the body listens.

    Comment by Special K — April 25, 2011 @ 01:51

  24. marcia’s joke is clever
    keep nursing your skin!

    Comment by Katherine: Unemployed — April 25, 2011 @ 06:35

  25. Ouch, that sunburn is no joke! I was extra careful with my shoulders on race day bc shhhhhhhh (my wedding dress is strapless and wedding is 1 month away). I did write “i heart Ryan” on my arm and my arm got tan except for the writing lol. Ryan looked like Elmo after, ouch, sunburns hurt.
Ryan and i will be running hte Cox half marathon on Sunday, we are just going at cruising pace i would imagine. Sorry to hear about your struggles at Boston, it’s not my favorite course either.
