Friiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiday. Means Dance.

Still busy.  Still planning. In the process of moving to my sublet this weekend. But two posts in one week? One work week in fact? I’m happy with that.

Sooooooooooooo what’s keeping me sane? Musica. I don’t really know if any of these ones are considered “current” but they are goodies in my eyes and if I can scream at the top of my lungs and bust a move then it’s all good.

And since I’m taking casual Friday to the extreme and listening to my iPhone as well as going out dancing tonight (holllllllllllllllerrrrrrr) I want to use this post as a vehicle to start getting pumped (trust me: I spent the past…well I’m not going to admit to how long I actually spent searching/researching songs. I had to limit myself to lucky #4 for the blog though). And by pumped I mean creating a pre-gaming mix.  Suggestions are welcome!

Also note: these songs go on running mixes too.  Thankfully I don’t run with music often because I’m 97.3453% sure that I’d end up with more cracked ribs that way!

  • This one is just awesome to belt to. I’m toying with the idea of karaoke-ing it.  Angry. “You Lie” by The Band Perry
  •  “You Be Killing ‘Em” by Fabulous.  Mostly because it have the best line ever! (They say she a dime. I say she underrated)
  • “Evacuate the Dance Floor” by Cascada. Ummmmmmmmmm dancing. Need I say more?

Okay so that was 5. Moving onto running related notes before I add 5 more…

I’m still running obviously.  Like the month of May I’ve been running a lot of miles and trading off for speed.  Lately (aka this week) my energy levels increased a bit — mostly from sleeping a combined 34 hours over last Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and partly from doing more afternoon running — and my pace has sped up a bit as a result.

I. Wish.

I’m just rolling with the running thing.  My muscles are starting to feel slightly sore and so are my feet so I’m going to take it as a sign to start listening to my body and ease up if it seems to be an ongoing/recurring/continuing thing.

But that whole going out and dancing thing tonight? If it’s going to cause muscle/feet soreness, well then, I think it’s a price I’ll have to pay. Have a great weekend y’all!

A Drowned Rat Looks Better Than You

…according to my roomie after my run this morning. It was said with love though, I think, and was said because I was dripping rain all over the apartment. Even after taking off most of my layers outdoors. Boo rain.

But my run on Tuesday was really freaking good.  It helped that the weather was really nice, not as humid as Monday with  partly cloudy and mid 50s for the temperature.  And YAY I beat the rain.  The only downside was that I had to stop 4 times to find a bathroom although the plus side is that I now know all the buildings on this particular route that have public restrooms.  Win? Maybe?

It was a mid-y kind of run distance wise, last “real run” before Monday, and my legs are feeling tired and twinge-y and, well, taper-y.  Although strangely enough I finished feeling pumped up and strong. So I made the executive decision to run the risk of being late for work so I could do this

Put my feet up, eat some breakfast and enjoy the wonderful weather. I really can’t think of a better way to start the day. The mornings have been really nice lately and so have the nights, I’ve actually been able to sleep with the window open!

And yes those are the Boston 2010 chip and the WR 2010 tag on those shoes.  I guess that pair has fallen to be the “racing shoes” as they’ve only been broken out for races (I train in the same style but, obviously different pair as these guys have ~200 miles on them)

And they’ll be the ones that I wear when I run Boston again this year.  I think I probably should have switched into newer shoes (hell even these ones and gotten a new pair for the race) as my ones I’ve been running have…well I’ll keep that a secret between me and my excel “shoe miles” spreadsheet.

I did not wear them again today because it was a rainy and dreary day and I didn’t want them to get “ruined”.  Bleh. But it’s okay overall because *fingerscrossed* the weather for Monday looks clear. I can handle the rain for a few more days.  At least it’s not snow, right?

The run itself was pretty awful.  The rain made the 40* seem even colder. I was actually shivering pretty much the entire time. Not cool mother nature. Not cool. So I was miserable for 96.3453% of the run. Overall I’m okay with it because it wasn’t a confidence deflating run.  I knew that the constant, unrelenting rain factored in, so did the choice of route (hello hills!) and the fact that, due to being very busy yesterday at work, I hadn’t eaten much on Tuesday.

And it was sans music.

Lately I’ve been using my iphone to listen to music while doing my runs.  Not every one, maybe 3 times a week. It started probably with bad intentions: I wanted to not pay attention to my leg.  BAD.  But on my easy (and not 0530) runs I’ve been listening to a playlist that’s been pumping me up.  I want to dance (and actually it’s been a pre-gaming mix too) when I hear the songs. And it’s been getting me through some not so stellar training without me obsessing about pace and other runners on the pathway I run.

Which is why I want to share it with YOU.  Yes this is MM’s first giveaway.  A music one.

I’m actually going to pick two winners. The first will win the stuff I’ve been listening to during my training and this is the mix I’m debating bringing to Boston to play intermittently during the painful miles. At the very least it’s the one I’ll force my mom to listen to as she drives me to Hopkinton. The second winner will get my last year Boston mix, the one I listened to in the car on the drive to the start.

Oh iPod

How I wished you hadn’t died on me so long ago.  Not that I miss it for my running but because I want to go to the cafe to do work and listen to music.  Sure I could bring my computer but that’s so much more effort haha.

Anyway another chilly morning. Another morning of frozen hands.  Seems like I’m a broken record in that deptartment.  And will be for another few days I think.

But I gutted out some miles in the bitter cold yet again.  8 to be exact.  Like yesterday I started off strong but faded a bit by the end.  Nothing terrible or significant but fading.  Yuck.  I want my negative splits please! I shouldn’t complain too much as my pace was decent I just want to be able to hold onto my go-get-em pace for longer.  Maybe some tempo is in order tmrw or soonish.  My legs felt  fine after yesterdays longer run but maybe they really are tired from the Thanksgiving feast of running and that’s where the fading is coming in.

Certainly my back is.  I don’t know if I mentioned this before here but I have two bulging discs in my lower back.  Nothing serious/major but they’re there.  And I have PT exercises to keep the back pain away and keep everything in balance with my ab and back muscles.  I think I overdid the running and threw that balance out of whack because for the past two nights I’ve had terrible back pain that’s been keeping me up! No bueno.  Guess I’m going to have to be extra diligent for the next few weeks.

Also need to be extra diligent in my quest for a Boston plan.  Training starts December 28th! Why did I not know this before yesterday?! Why did I think that I had until late January for training to start?! Oh man.  Gotta get my butt in gear. And Lacey my area is flat flat flat so I might take you up on that offer to run in some hilly areas with you 🙂

Okay short post today because I have to get some work done.  Serious work.  I have “el mesa de espanol” tonight and I need to make up for the time I’m going to miss there now.  And EarlyRunner: I just about choked on my food when I read your comment yesterday! Hilarious!

Thanks for the calming thoughts and words yesterday about my future.  I guess in my heart I know everything will work out but it’s really hard to trust that when nothing is set in stone.  And I’m a chick who likes to know everything years in advance haha.

Week = over!

Thanks for the good lucks guys.  I’m not quite sure how the exam went.  The essay questions I felt really comfy with but the multiple choice? Ugh.  Always such a hard section for me.  Oh well, it’s over now.  And I’ve been really successful so far about NOT compulsively checking my notes for the right answers.  Less stress this way I think.

My morning was just as crazy as normal.  I was up bright and early (well maybe not so bright as it was pitch black). Did some core work while I waited for the sun to come up.  You know how the other day I was complaining about my radio? Well the only time I get reception is at 0600 and it’s the top-40 channel.  If you’ve been following me at ALL you know I ❤ country.  So I get to listen to “Party in the USA” and that Pitbull song while I rock the abs.  Heh.

Another cool morning, maybe 42* when I left? Funny how it wasn’t that much warmer than yesterday but mentally knowing that it was above 40 made heading out so much nicer haha. And since the weather was chilly I did another 9-er! Craziness.  And I ran it faster than yesterday by about 90 seconds which (for the not-so-math inclined) is 10 seconds per mile faster!

My quads are still feeling sore though and I think it’s because I’ve been pounding on them so much.  If you have a good memory you’ll note that I’ve really been putting in the miles.  Since tmrw is suppose to be rainy and thunderstorm-y I think it might be a nice day to catch up on some TV (L&O: SVU, the Office, NCIS, Numb3rs) and get to do some work.

My morning classes went well.  I had to recite a French poem that went SPECTACULARLY compared to how I thought so I was tres happy.  And I actually had physio class where we learned new material.  Ew.  The test wasn’t until 1400 because my prof wanted class time to keep plugging along in the course.  Lame.

After the exam (which took forever and was hard!) I went grocery shopping because I was out of dairy stuff.  Plus it’s also very nice to get off campus every once and a while.  I essentially live in a bubble, oh small liberal arts school. I can steal all the bread, grains, fruits and veggies from the dining hall but dairy? Not so much.  And I drink ~40 oz of milk a day and eat 2-3 8oz yogurts.  Granted some of the milk is at meals but I love having afternoon bowls of cereal and I need my own stash of milk for that. So now I have a fully stocked fridge.

I also have a fully stocked bureau because I did laundry last night. I had been putting it off for about 3 weeks and I was at serious risk for running around naked (and given how cold it’s been and the fact that my school won’t turn the heat on for another 2 weeks-ish that wouldn’t be good).  I realized how worn out all my sports bras and underwear are.  Definitely need to hit up the mall or something.  Yay shopping! But boo shopping because that means I need $$.  Something clearly lacking in my life.

Okay, Friday night = watching my (former) roomie playing vball during homecoming weekend.  She’s 12 kills away from joining the 1000 kill club.  Since I know you guys are so nice, if you could send some good vibes her way I’d really appreciate it.

And since it’s homecoming weekend lots of my ’09 friends will be on campus so I’m sure tonight will be lots of fun even though I have no concrete plans right now.  There is a dance (yes my school has dances) so that might be fun.  I think the theme is black light? Definitely could be interesting.

It’s also my friend’s anniversary of her 21st.  Always a good time! Heh.

“I’m an asphalt cowboy…

Still on the Jason Aldean kick.  I just am craving his music so I’ve just been playing his cds on repeat. I must be annoying the neighbors for sure because it’s been a constant loop of the same stuff haha. If you’ve never listened to him, DO IT!

Today I don’t have to go into work (the gym) until noon so I got to sleep in a bit.  It was nice because I got to watch Psych last night (such a funny show!) and still get 8.5 hours before I got up.

I hit the streets around 0800 for a nice 7.6 miler.  My legs felt better than yesterday but by the end of the run I was absolutely famished! I guess I don’t really notice it when I’m up at 0600 because my mind hasn’t gotten up yet, but since I typically get up at 0800 anyway my stomach wanted food. It was a pretty relaxing run, no sense of urgency.  Granted, that translates into a slow pace but it was nice to enjoy the moment I was in.  Pretty rare for me to get to do that.  I’m usually thinking of stuff a mile a minute.

The only complaint I had about it was that I think my shoes are getting to the point where they need to be replaced.  Stinks because I don’t have the $$ to do it but it’s gotten to the point where I really can’t ignore the small nagging aches in my shins and feet. Boo! Maybe I’ll try to mooch a new pair off of my mom or dad.  Can’t hurt to try right? Heh.

The weather was decent, very humid but not too hot yet.  It would be the perfect beach day if only I didn’t have to work! Oh well, it’s my last day and hopefully I can fit a beach day in soon.  In fact, I’m going to up Lake Winnipesaukee tonight or tmrw to spend some time actually on a vacation.  My friend has (what I affectionately refer to as) a compound up there so it will be really nice to sit by the lake and read and swim and relax (if that’s even possible for me haha). This conveniently coincides with the return of my family who are coming back from a week on the cape today.  I still have a ton of stuff to do to prepare for my back to school trip this upcoming Friday which may or may not stress me out.  But hey, I think it’ll be worth it.

I’m hopefully going to get some good runs in too.  It’ll be nice to get a change of scenery.  Plus running by a lake –> jumping in said lake when run is done.  Not sure if I can handle the amazingness of it but trust me, I will try.

Up up up and awayyyy

Wowza. I haven’t run much (read: at all) over 90 mins since the marathon almost 5 weeks ago. Partly it’s because I don’t have anything goal wise and partly because my ideal run is around 90 mins , so why push further, right?

In any case, today I decided to do something longer, like half marathon distance longer.  Glad to be able to say that I did it.  Boy though, my legs didn’t want any of it.  At least they complained the first 5 miles and the last 4, so I guess I got 4 miles when I didn’t have to bully the legs into chugging along. Heh.

And while my legs were trying to tell my mind that they wanted to stop, I couldn’t help but wonder if listening to music while running would shut my legs up. Thoughts?

Yes, I know, music while running is considered the 8th deadly sin by some and I’ll admit that when I run by someone who’s listening to an ipod or some other mp3 player, I feel smug because I am not.  It wasn’t always that way though.  I used to run with my ipod religiously until it broke (stupid piece of junk!) in May 2007, the day before I was to start my first half marathon training cycle!  Obviously I got over my adversion to running without music and did really well and didn’t give my ipod another thought.

About a year later from the breaking I re-charged it and it worked! If you knew me from RWOL or school or whatever, you’ll recall that the first run I took my “new” ipod on, I ended up super lost and my 14 miles turned into 18. Whoops.  Regardless, I still used it on runs that I knew was going to be tough motivationally or easy runs and left it at home for the tempo and speedwork that really does need to have your brain’s focus.

Then it broke again, this time just at the beginning of my marathon training cycle. Super-de-duper, right? Well I haven’t touched it since (not that I think it will turn on or anything).

But now I’m conflicted.  I love the way running without music allows me to be in-tune with my body and pay attention to it more.  On the other hand, a run like today could have benefited from the distraction because I was running my 13 come hell or high water.

I guess posing my question to me isn’t useful, as I’m not likely anytime soon to plunk down $$ on an ipod when fall tutition is due soon.  But, if I were to budget carefully, some type of small mp3 player could be a possibility.  So, do you listen to music when you run? Why or why not?
