I Waited All Winter For This.

And, no, I’m not talking about this little thing that I’m doing next Monday.

Or the ice cream brownie sundae I got to eat on my porch last night with the brownie recipe below. I have to carb sugar load for Boston, right?

I’m talking about SPRING. Like, real spring. Not some date on the calendar (although I think that mother nature and the calendar should get on the same page) but warm weather. The kind where my roomie and I could actually sit on the balcony and not be all bundled up! Hallelujah (and yes I’m acutely aware that I just jinxed myself. And all of you. I apologize in advance. Especially since we all know this jinxing will occur on the 18th)

The overnight lows were in the 40s and the highs were damn near 60* the past 5 day.  We didn’t actually hit 60, which is my typical benchmark for spring.  But I think that, given how rough winter was for the large majority of the country, I’ll let it slide.

With the rising temps I’m always tempted to raise my miles as well.  Which I probs disregarded the first week of my taper. BUT I have shown some restraint and there have been no fartlek runs or anything resembling speed work.  While I may be in the mindset of going with the flow I’m too scared to risk anything with speed work! Especially since the runs keep going back and forth between pain and pain free. Which some of you (smart minds 🙂 ) told me in my last post. I just need to relax and ride out the next week-ish until the race. Eeep. Easy running has been my bread and butter for the past 5(!!) weeks, no need to mess with it.

And it’s taper time, right?

Easy running, therefore was the story of the weekend.  Thursday and Friday were easy mid-distance days, Saturday was my last “long run” and Sunday was somewhere between short and mid.  All in bright shining sunlight.  Some wind but that felt great and “cooled things off”. (Can you tell how excited I am about the weather. Every paragraph refers to it. And in a glowing way!) <– Happiness.

All the runs were pretty darn fast too.  Relatively speaking, which even with that disclaimer is still confidence boosting.  Definitely no sub-9 miles (gosh I haven’t seen those since pre-injury!) but fast enough to tell me that I’m recovering.  Hopefully in a week, those 26.2 miles between Hopkinton and Boston don’t throw a monkey wrench in it.

Aside from working on my tan (which I really need to be diligent about the sunscreen this year. Hello another 3 moles removed! And hello sun-freckle-spot thingy machine that was at clinic last week and showed me the damage on my skin.  Surprisingly it wasn’t as bad as I thought but the sunscreen needs to be a daily thing) I’ve been baking a bit. Or rather my roomie told me “we are making brownies to bring to pub trivia”. So really a bit = once and because I was told to.

So I did. We used this recipe from All Recipes and it turned out pretty good if I do say so myself.  And the fact that there were none left by the end of the night is a good sign too (do not disillusion me by saying that we were drinking at trivia night. Irrelevant!) If I were to make them in the future I’d try and tweak the recipe to make them more fudgey. Maybe less flour and an extra egg?  I know that with all my box mixes I get to add an extra egg to fudgify it.

Hope everyone is enjoying your Monday! I knew when I left work on Friday that today was going to be a rough one but, hey, the weather is nice and I’m sitting on a really good (well relatively speaking anyway) 8.5 miler already done.  There was IT pain and my legs felt dead. But that could be taper related.  The humidity was definitely a factor as well, 53* and 91% humidity! And YES to spring again because the sun actually rose in the first half of my run.

So I say: Monday? Bring it on!

Laundry or Food

Anyway…I do want to bitch (again) about the weather.  As Sarah so astutely pointed out

the recent “cold” weather has felt weirdly warm for me. Like, it will say 19 degrees outside, but I’ll be sweating within minutes. I’m not sure what this means, other than it’s 19 degrees in late March and that’s not particularly appealing. Humidity?

I’ve been stepping outside of my apartment WAY overdressed.  But I’m dressing based on the temperature, and even taking sun / cloud cover into account, I’m overdressing.   She’s 100% right that 19* at the very end of March is sooooooooo not what anyone wants.  But it feels warm.  And, dare I say it?, nice! I hate to think that after 24 years of suffering through the cold I’m about to adapt.

We’ll see though, as it’s supposed to snow April 1.

Happy April's Fools Day y'all

Gotta love the north east.  In any case, the weather has been nice out lately. Or so it feels. Weird.

Which was the case for Wednesday’s 0530 run.  I figured that, with it being in the 20s and with the sun still sleeping (which is EXACTLY what I wanted to be doing when my alarm went off.) I’d be a little chilly.  Nope, I was sweating within minutes and, after running the first of 2 loops, shed the sweatshirt and mittens.

And then I ran the second loop faster than the first one.  Which is my standard M.O. but lately, aka with the IT band acting wonky, it’s been the opposite and I’ve been more tortoise than hare during the final stretch.  Not sure what this means but I’ll take it! The total pace was still on the slow side though as my leg was achy for longer.  Still no pain.  I’ll take that too.

Especially as I go into…taper? I feel like I’ve been tapering already! It’s been almost 3 weeks since I did anything hard.  This weekend marks 3 weeks since my last long run, which was the 24 miler that I think was the trigger for the IT pain.  I mean, I definitely haven’t been slacking with the overall mileage (and thanks to those of you who have assured me that the 20 split that I did this weekend is okay) butttttt I’m hoping that I surprise myself in a few weeks.

That said, I’m not quite sure how I should attack the next 2.5 weeks.  Obviously it’s taper time (although I was going to do a 2 week taper originally) and I can’t cram any true goodness into my body in terms of workouts but I can’t help but feel that my body is going to be stale when I get to that starting line.  Any thoughts / suggestions as to how I go about the next 17 days? (zoooooomg is that it?!)

I still haven’t ordered my jacket yet.  I probs should get on that. But right now I’m still giddy over some exciting news about my future after my year with AmeriCorps and the clinic is done. I feel really terrible about not being able to share more on here but, with nothing set in stone and my year with AmeriCorps still having 4.5 months left (yes that has become a mantra for me!) I’m going to continue to be cagey.  But good vibes are appreciated for everything to work out and not fall through at this stage.

I’ll also be nice and let you listen to the amazingness that is Enrique.  I’m soooooooooooo feeling him and his latest music. Although I do prefer the non-radio edit version.

I’m off for what I’m hoping to be a 13 – 15 miler.  My (or rather my IT Band’s) version of a long run.  Then again, maybe I’m supposed to be doing something shorter as this is the taper.  But it’s the beginning of it. Gaaaaaaaah.  This is what I get for flying by the seat of my pants with training! Fingers crossed I make it.  Or rather make it intact! I didn’t sleep well last night (couldn’t fall asleep so I stayed up watching NCIS and The Office then kept waking up during the night) so it should be interesting to say the least.

Here We Go Again

Bleh. I’ve been meaning to blog, because I’ve had some pretty good stuff happen lately. But my computer is very likely on it’s last legs and acting a bit wonky.  And I’ve been busy.  In a good way. Despite my intentions of “a bad life decision weekend” happening (which I’m not saying didn’t) I was actually really REALLY productive.  I’ll keep being cagey about my plans for next year but let’s say that I’ve been making lots of headway there. Exciting.  Scary but exciting.

I also got my bangs trimmed this weekend and I finally have them again. The excitement is palpable people. Palpable.

Also exciting? Well let’s also just say that, being from the suburbs, I’ve never had to actually WAIT for a table at iHop at 0130.  The pancakes, however, made up for it.

Judge me all you want but the banana/strawberry ones AND the blueberry ones are mine.

But it was a good source of carbs for my long run on Saturday.  Because…wait for it…I ran TWENTY MILES.

Not in a row but I ran a good 14 miler when I first woke up and then, because my leg was feeling good, I ran a pre-dinner 6 miler.  I am totally aware that 14+6 =/= 20 miles in terms of actual training but I’m happy that I was able to cover 20 miles in a day.  Makes me more optimistic about Boston. Of course, the pace that I’m running at, well this run was much faster than my typical runs have been, is slow (like I really felt like I was hoofing it here where it normally is a pace that I can feel easy about) I know that I can at least cover the 26.2 miles from Hopkington to Boston. Quickly? Well that’s a different story.

It didn’t hurt that weather was FABULOUS. Okay, so it was 25* but it was sunny and I ended up being WAY overdressed for the first run.  Oh well.  It also didn’t hurt that I loaded up my iphone with some really good (read: catchy pop / hip-hop) songs and that lightened my mood.  I’m not one to use music, like, ever but it was a good change of pace. Although, side note, I have my tragus pierced and I cannot for the life of me get ear buds to stay in that ear. Help?

So no leg pain! YAY. It was a bit achy later that day but nothing serious or hurting.  I think that since I’ve stopped rolling my IT band the improvement in the pain has been really nice.  Miss Zippy (I think?) told me that sometimes rolling the IT band when it’s still hurt and not on the way out of recovery can irritate it more, which is likely the case. I’ve also stopped the PT exercises for the same reason…right now it’s about babying it.  And rolling + exercise, while in the end will be a huge asset to me, is not helping at the moment and not what I need at the moment.

Of course, one could argue that running 20 miles in a day would be irritating to it as well.  Battles people. Battles.

Like the follow up 10 on Sunday with some tightness in my quad but still no pain. Even afterward when the aches typically really start up.  Same thing with Monday’s run: I got a good 12 miler in.  I wanted to go a bit further because I had a late night clinic and I really enjoyed it.  Like my LR this weekend I listened to music and it got me through the miles.  The last 1-2 miles were a little more than achy so I’m glad that I was running late for work (hello comfy bed in the morning!) so I couldn’t stay out any longer.

I then tempted fate this morning and heck YES to the pace I was running at.  Definitely not my usual clip but it was fast.  I felt like I was huffing and puffing.  But it didn’t feel like I was flying so I figured I was going the slow pace that’s been the usual and I was pissed off about my cardio fitness as of late and made me question whether I’d hold up at Boston.  In reality I was going decently.  Maybe that’s why my leg started hurting a bit earlier in the runs than I’ve been used to lately.  I did truck on, I mean how could I not with “Fuck You” blasting in my ears, and there’s no lasting pain during the day, but I’m still conflicted as to what Boston holds in store for me.

Basically, regardless of my runs, I’ve been trying to enjoy this lovely weather lately.  Yes I am sick of waking up and running in 25-30* weather (spring…whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?) but the sun has been shining and so I’ve been sweating wicked badly because I’m overdressing (if overdressing =  shorts, longsleeve, sweatshirt). I guess that the sun can make up for cooler temps.

How’s that for an all over the place post? Long and short of it? I’m busy but excited. Nervous too.  I can just feel that I’m on the precipice of something…it has the potential to be either amazing and earth shattering or an utter disaster. Either way it sure won’t be boring.

Intervals With A Twist of Lemon

Okay so no lemons here.  There was the potential for lemons, however, as I attempted my first outdoor interval session this morning. I’ve done them before outside but never this cycle and never as a part of a structured plan.  I really crave the immediate knowledge of pacing feedback that the TM gives me.

That said, the weather was just WAY TOO NICE to pass up.  Upper 40s when I started to low 50s when I ended. Life is good. SPRING?! Please Mother Nature: don’t take this away!

And while I’m really happy I went outside, I suffered the worst “guilt” ever about it. It was a pretty agonizing decision.  I mean, it’s not something I got an ulcer over, but I went back and forth, back and forth. On one hand:

  • The weather
  • Getting a good evaluation of where I am with pacing myself
  • The weather
  • I wouldn’t feel obligated to add hills afterward (no hills in my area and I wouldn’t be hitting the gym up after) which would be a plus to the shin thing (hills aren’t the friendliest)

On the other hand:

  • I love having the pace dictated to me so that I can maximize the workout
  • Boston has hills and I would include them
  • I would get to watch The History Channel
  • No garmin meaning I’d be doing laps of the school (1.14 miles) repeatedly.  Boring and I’m sure people would also think I’m crazy given my workout
  • Late night the past few nights + big miles = very fatigued MM

Okay so the decision doesn’t look so hard when I write it out like that.  The biggest thing going for the gym/TM was that I was AFRAID OF FAILURE and that I wouldn’t be able to A) hit my paces or B) be able to be consistent with paces.

I told myself that consistency would be the name of the game here and that I’d force myself to be happy with just even pacing. The workout I was doing was a 1-2-2-1 mile, kind of a semi-ladder at 10k pace.  On a TM that equates roughly to 7:08 pace (my real PR pace is around 7:13) so I was shooting for around there and my guess was that I’d be a little on the low side although I wouldn’t know it until after I was done and had run the numbers through a calculator.

Even though so many people love their garmins I think NOT having one is a PLUS for me.  Sure it drives me a little crazy that I don’t know how my splits go but I think it helps keep me somewhat relaxed as the best I can do is the best I can do and I’m not worried about being off during the workout when my focus needs to be on the current interval.

How’d I do?

  • 3.8 mile warm up @ 9:04 pace
  • 1.14 (7:15 pace) – 2.28 (7:08)– 2.28 (7:16) – 1.14 (7:07) miles with .5 and 1.1 miles recovery respectively (Avg pace for total recovery:838 )
  • 3.8 mile warm down @ 8:46 pace

Total time: 144 minutes 25 seconds
Total distance: ~17.6 miles
Average pace: 8:13

I have mixed feelings about this.  On one hand I’m very happy that I was able to keep my pace as fast as it was.  There’s totally something to say about the influence of weather (as many of you guys reminded me on my last post where I mention SAD).  Another positive was that my shin only started bugging during the last mile.  *Not Pain!* but a “oh hey I want ice when we’re done”. I’m a bit bummed that I wasn’t consistent the way I wanted to be.  But the numbers are right where I figured they’d be.

Another shocker to this workout was how fast the recovery as well as warm up/down times were.  It definitely didn’t feel that fast at all and I questioned how accurate my watch was!

That said, I really was feeling all happy and smiley.  Right around the halfway mark (you know: the point where the rest just seems like nothing because you’re halfway done) I really started feeling good and like I could do this.  I think what also helped was that I had just read this from TheFitnessista before heading out:

““Make it yours, and own it.” Many of you asked me about the pilot’s pep talk he gave me before the half marathon. Since I know many of you have races and events coming up, I thought I’d share the almond-shell version with ya’ll. We were sitting at Seasons 52, waiting for our friends to arrive, and I was telling him about how nervous I was. He said, “You know what, it’s going to suck. It’s going to be terrible, hard, and you’ll be hating it. But the thing is, you can let the ‘suck’ beat you and take you down… or you can make it yours, and own it. If something’s going to be painful and terrible, you might as well make it worthwhile. It’s a temporary thing and before you know it, it will be over.” So while I was running (sans iPod!! GAH!), I kept thinking about the fact that it was going to be over eventually and I might as well make it worthwhile, no matter how difficult it was. Before I knew it, we were in the car driving home”

And it totally ran through my head when I wanted to slow up because the wind was blowing really hard or I was going up a slight incline that felt like Everest the billionth time I hit it.  I just kept telling myself that “YES THIS IS HARD. But it’s going to be over soon.  Make the most of it”.  So thanks Gina (if you read my blog) for the help!

Another interesting note is that, while I’ve been really open about my struggle with pacing outdoors, I find intervals outside is easier that tempos.  Maybe because it’s such a short time frame (although I guess I wasn’t totally “on” since my paces weren’t exactly even) but I never felt like I was going fast. I think this has to do with roads and the elements vs tm and controlled climate.  I know that the inherent differences between the two will likely make me sore tomorrow because I know I was using muscles that haven’t really been tested yet.

I had to keep telling myself to pump my arms hard to go faster, but I’d easily forget and then have to re-remind myself hah! I also kept telling myself to be “light and effortless”.  I think that this mantra of the day was helpful because it regulated my breathing a bit and got me to calm down.  Which in turn likely helped me go a bit faster.

So overall: I’m very happy. I doubt I’ll give up my lovely TM for intervals anytime soon but it’s a good mental relief to know that I can do an interval workout.  And who knows: maybe I really am getting faster.  It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that I’ve been training for a bit over 10 weeks so it’s natural to be getting faster and making improvements.

Either way I’m very proud of my accomplishment today on the track on the lap of campus that I used as a large track.  What I’m not proud of? Not getting enough sleep last night because I was up so late doing work!! So I’m going to wrap this novella up so I can go be productive and hopefully not have a late night.  Because there’s no way in HELL that I’m missing watching LOST live.

Technically a Double Day

So I totally now believe in SAD: season affective disorder.  I used to think people who complained of it were just B.S.ing me.  BUT you know that funk I complained about for days on end last week? Well it’s not gone (still too much crap going on in my personal life) but my mood is improving.  And I think it’s because of the weather.

The past 3 days have all had highs in the 50s(!!!!!) and today hit 60*.  It’s been sunny and warm and amazing.  It just makes me breathe easier and make me a bit more able to cope with life stuff.  It’s glorious. And tempting to run a lot.  Which is what I did today.

My morning started by me being woken up by the sun (yes I rise with the sun literally) around 0630 and laying in bed for an extra 15 minutes. Mind you: I didn’t hit the sheets until midnight and probably took about an hour to actually fall asleep. My alarm wasn’t set until 0715 (well really 0714 heh) but I figured that I could use the extra time to stretch my calf (soooo tight) as well as my shin and do some shin exercises.

By the time I hit the streets I figured that after my huge mileage week it was a good thing that I was 20 minutes ahead of schedule because I’d likely need those minutes for my run in order to make it to class on time haha.  For some reason this wasn’t the case: my run felt great and I ran it close to 30 seconds FASTER than a typical Monday run: clocking in at 9:22 average! I know for some of you that’s creepy-crawly-might-as-well-be-walking pace but it’s perfect for my Monday run.

I think part of what helped was that I don’t look at my watch at all during the run (since I’m so numbers obsessed I do need to look at it afterward at some point to get the data).  And while the first loop felt dreadfully slow I could feel myself naturally pick up the pace the second half which is ALWAYS a pleasant feeling.

So just to make it clear: up earlier than normal, running faster than normal.  This should equal plenty of time before my class.  And if you think this you’d be correct: I finished up everything about 25 minutes earlier than normal.  Upon starting my computer, however, I discovered that my class had been canceled.  D’oh!

Oh well, it was an amazing run.  The weather just uplifted me and put me in a good mood.  Plus I got to relax a bit when catching up on blogs/email/RW.  And then I got to use that class time to work on Quantum.  Not really fun per se but necessary.

Flash forward to my lifting session around noon time.  First off, I think that there was a memo sent around telling all the males who were going to be in the weight room to wear a combo of red and black.  Apparently I also read this memo because I was looking all hot and seksi in my red short-shorts and black top.  Hahah wish I had taken a picture!

The lifting itself was un-remarkable mostly because, upon the sound advice of you guys, I’ve decided to just try and maintain my strength in the time coming up to the race.  For me this means not changing up my routine because I don’t want to do anything that will compromise a run by being wicked sore.  Sure I’ll get all sore from a running routine and be okay with it but I don’t really want that from lifting. Especially since the day after lifting is a quality run.

Okay…so here’s the deal: after lifting I said to myself that I wanted to go outside for my warm down.  Which I’ve done before. No problem.  Well actually there is a problem: the weather.  I stepped outside and was like, okay I can go a bit longer than a normal warm down just keep the pace in check.  Because shorts and a t-shirt (yes still the gloves though. Likely until June haha) is such a rare occurrence in early March.

Pace in check? I’m feel SO DAMN GOOD.  Seriously.  My pace was SUB-9!! What?! For a warm down?! I saw this after about 3.5 miles and thought “what the hell? This isn’t a warm-down! This is a second run!” And since for me a run is <4 miles I went 4.3 miles at 8:52 pace (I also told myself that if I hit sub-9s for the whole thing I would count it as a run, got to keep my mind happy with numbers and stats ahaha). I wanted to go more but was under time-constraints and I was really pushing it with the amount I went. But…

It. Felt. Amazing. I was smiling the whole damn run and it just felt soooooooooooo awesome. It felt like SPRING IS HERE. And with T-6 weeks ’til Boston I also thought about how perfect it would be if the weather was like this on race day.  I realize that I live in New England and winter ain’t over until, oh say, July hahah.

And so far I’m feeling pretty good in the aftermath.  No shin “pain” (although I did ice down afterward), no aches that shouldn’t be there.  No indication that I ran a total of about 17 miles. Except that I’m pretty darn hungry heh.  A lot of you commented that you’d like to see a “How MM eats” type of thing.  I’ve done some stuff with that but more in regards to pre, during and post – run stuff.  I’d be happy to try and put together something though about day-to-day.  Might not happen until I’m on spring break (T-4 days) but be on the look out. And maybe I’ll actually use my camera and take pictures 🙂

Enough talk! Or writing as the case may be.  I need to get cracking on my homework so that I’m not a crazy person right before leaving for break.  Well I’m pretty much a crazy person all the time but you know what I mean ha. That said, it looks like (*fingerscrossed*) that I might make it out of the science center in time for 24 at 2100 or at least CSI: Miami at 2200.  Hollllllleeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr.

Last Day of Spring In Febrero I Guess

Yaaaawn.  I didn’t get to bed until 0100 last night technically this morning I guess.  After tutoring stats last night I was working in the lab and while the experiment didn’t take long I wanted to work a lot on the report so that took up about a billion hours.  Okay so more like 3.  But still a 0100 bedtime and a body that wants to wake up at 0630? Maybe not the best combo. Hopefully I can pry myself away from my work at a decent hour tonight (or even just take a break watch 24 live) but sometimes when you’re on a roll you’re on a roll you know?

But gosh it was just so beautiful outside today!  When I got up this morning the weather was clear and sunny and 25*.  It was 0630 so the temperature, while cold, was really pleasant and actually felt warm.  Shorts for me 🙂

I did a recovery/easy run today. I never know what to call Monday runs because they’re typically around recovery pace BUT there’s nothing hard to recover from per se so it feels awkward. I’m sure that my legs need it because they don’t really want to go faster but it’s hard for me to comprehend that it takes 2 days or so to shake out the LR.

My shin bugged me a bit but it’s hard to say what it is exactly.  It’s probably something benign like shin splints like I said yesterday but my mind always goes to the worse case scenario: stress fracture? tendinitis? GAH. But I’ve noticed that it feel the most “pain” (and it’s not pain more of a annoying pressure) when I first get up or if I’ve been sitting for a long time and it gets stiff. So in class I’ve been doing the “alphabet” exercise and it’s been helping.  Plus I’m sure it’s strengthening the shin, so it’s a two birds, one stone deal-io.

A couple people have asked how I did my “pre-hab” as the catchy phrase says.  I wish I had some secret cure that I could market and become rich off of.  Alas I did it the good old fashioned way: stretching and strengthening.  I didn’t use ice, mostly because in a college dorm that’s really cumbersome.  But for my achilles I stretched like a mofo and for my plantar I stretched and Stick’d my calves like there was no tomorrow.  So I guess more stretching than strengthening but I’m 99.99% sure that I did a little strength stuff.  Most of my “injuries” are a result of tight muscles though, so stretching has been the cure.

After hablar-ing espanol this mornning, I hit up the gym for some lifting and man did I feel on FIRE today. I don’t know what it was, maybe I was feeling time pressed because I had a really busy afternoon set up for me?, but I just powered through my routine.  And it wasn’t a half-assed powering either.  I just felt strong.  It was like I was just so focused and invincible (heh almost just wrote invisible!) After lifting I just had to do my warm down outside because at this point it was 45*.  I’ve been so spoiled the past 4 or 5 days with SPRING weather.

Unfortunately this isn’t going to be the case for long. I had been debating switching up my tempo and intervals this week because I knew that the end of the week was suppose to be precipitation filled but I just checked the forecast and the rain/snow is suppose to start tonight.  Bummer.  At least I got to enjoy 45* (!!) weather earlier today and now I don’t feel bad about using the TM tomorrow as there won’t be any nice weather to waste!

And as a follow up on the apparel: I’m leaning towards the celebration one in the men’s sizing.  I’m DEFINITELY getting a jacket.  No questions 🙂 As much as I really do try and be humble in everyday life, I need to brag on this a bit.  And jacket = best advertisement everrrrrrr.

Well after re-reading this post it’s a bit everywhere hahaha.  Oops. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t have any idea what you want to write about when you sit down! Currently I’m sitting in the academic center attempting to do my work (never ending you know?) and praying that no students come for physics tutoring. Does that make me a bad person? Heh.

I promise that tomorrow I’ll have a slightly more exciting post (remember *slightly* hahah) as it’s going to be INTERVAL TUESDAY.  I think I’m doing shorter stuff which is always very scary to me.  I’m excited though.  Going fast is ever so much fun:

I <3 Spring

Yes I do.  Sometimes I think that I really only like it because its right after winter, and I HATE winter.  With the heat of a thousand suns.  Spring weather is so random though (maybe because it’s New England, where the weather changes when the wind blows, or something like that) with a high today of 60* but this time last week we struggled to break 40*.  And I’m not going to discount the fact that we could get a blizzard, like, tmrw or something crazy but the general trend of weather is that it seems to be warming up.  And I enjoy that.  A lot. That said, it was 31* when I got up.  So despite Spring being here right now, my running is not benefiting from it.

Such is life I guess.  Well, I still was able to get a nice recovery run in.  The pace was prolly ridiculously slow but I didn’t worry about it / time myself.  I have a general idea of how long I was out there but hey, sometimes I just need to check my type A personality at the door right? Absolutely. After two days of double digit runs I needed to tone it down, so I planned to run my 6.2 mile route.  Apparently I have problems just stopping when I say I’m going to and I tacked on an extra mile at the end.  No bigs, except that I went to Spanish without having showered.  Hey, it was either no shower or no food.  And there was no way on earth I was skipping breakfast. Favorite meal of the day, hands down.  Anyone else feel me on that?

Back to running.  And recovery from tough stuff.  I find it really hard to incorporate it.  Ok, before y’all (is it obvious that I need to head South?) start reacting let me say that I *do* recovery stuff.   Over time pushing so hard makes me feel very run down both physically and mentally and I start to get cranky all the time beyond my typical complainer lifestyle. But after feeling spectacular from yesterday my first thought is that I want that again.  Give me another hit of this running stuff!  Plus if I want to rock my last 20 miler this weekend, I need to let my muscles get strong!

Tying running and weather together again, it’s supposed to rain on Saturday when I have my long run planned.  Bummed out because I really enjoy going long on Saturday but running in the rain (well anything other than Summer rain) is not enjoyable to me.  So I might have to move it to Sunday.  I’m such a creature of habit that it’s freaking me out.  No rational reason for it,  I just want to keep routine.  Kind of funny because there was a time when I would never have dreamed of running long stuff on Saturday.  In fact I started out this training cycle running ’em on Sundays.  C’est la vie.  Hopefully Mother Nature will take the hint and no rain on me.

So I’m not sure if I just wrote a cohesive post or not.  I tend to just write, then go back and cut things out, expand on other stuff.  Sorry if it was hard to follow! Even if you didn’t follow / understand / like it, please send some good weather vibes for Saturday? 🙂
